Shepparton Foodshare is seeking donations of food staples to help address shortages in food supply for local people that need it most.
To help Shepparton Foodshare meet this need, Southern Cross Austereo is holding a food drive live on air from the front lawn of their Triple M and Hit 96.5 radio stations this Friday, December 8 from 6am to 9am.
And what better time to do this than now as we head into the festive season when those already doing it tough need an extra hand up.
Executive Officer, Glenn Peric said, “this is an easy way for you to help spread some festive cheer to those less fortunate in your own community and the radio station have made it easy to donate. Simply call past the radio station at 625 Wyndham Street, Shepparton this Friday morning and drop in your item of shelf stable food.
Right now, Foodshare really needs UHT milk, cereal, pasta sauce, sugar, muesli bars, 2-minute noodles, vegemite, jam, bottled water, shampoo and conditioner, body wash. Or why not consider a little festive treat for someone in need!
Shepparton Foodshare was born out of community need in 2012 and has operated ever since due to extreme generosity. The concept is simple, food is rescued and donated to give to people in need for free and tax-deductible funds are donated to support Shepparton Foodshare’s operating costs. And, the added benefit of this vital local service is that edible food is saved from waste and landfill helping the environment too!
Glenn said, “Southern Cross Austereo have been generous supporters of Shepparton Foodshare over the years supporting our fundraising, food and volunteer appeals so when they heard about our need for these food staples, they were quick to respond offering to conduct a public food drive on our behalf.”
SCA’s Shepparton Operations Manager Courtney Walder said all SCA staff were looking forward to helping those in need across the Goulburn Valley. “ The issue of food insecurity in Australia is growing each and every day, and SCA is proud to support Shepparton Foodshare in any way we can so they can provide nutritious and culturally appropriate food for those in need across Shepparton and the Goulburn Valley”.
Triple M Announcer, Josh Arthur, will be out on the lawn hosting the special Live Broadcast Food Drive encouraging the community to call past on their way to work or school drop off and support local people. Josh said, “If you are thinking about doing your shopping make sure you buy a little extra that you can bring down.”
Shepparton Foodshare is grateful for the regular support of many local food manufactures and growers via food donations however there are some staples that are really difficult for them to obtain so food drives help to meet the demand for these products.
“Glenn said it is so important that we have a diverse supply of food that those receiving it can build a meal around and that is culturally appropriate for our community.”
Shepparton Foodshare was established in 2012 as a result of community need. There is now 139 agencies registered to collect Foodshare food for the people they support across the Goulburn Valley and beyond. These registered agencies include emergency relief agencies, schools, churches, neighbourhood houses, community meals programs and more. The people they support are diverse and include individuals, children, the homeless, first nations people and people from our multicultural community, including new arrivals and refugees.
Glenn said, “with no other service offering this support locally, we are very grateful for this community support that enables our service to keep its doors open and not only meet the daily food relief needs of our community but to also respond during times of emergency and crisis and recovery.”
